Terms of Use

Terms for using Chest on macOS.

Last updated: October 5, 2026. These Terms of Use govern your download and use of Chest, a free macOS application provided by BORINGBAR LLC, and of the chest.boringbar.app website.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing or using Chest, or by using this website, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use Chest.

If you use Chest on behalf of a company, team or other organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

2. Free of Charge

Chest costs nothing. There is no purchase, trial, subscription or account. We may change, pause or stop distributing Chest at any time, and the source code stays available under the MIT License.

3. The MIT License

The Chest source code is copyright The Chest contributors and is licensed under the MIT License. You may use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell copies of it, as long as you keep the copyright and license notice.

If you build Chest yourself from its source, only the MIT License applies to your build.

4. What Chest Changes on Your Mac

Chest hides menu bar items by switching them off in System Settings › Menu Bar › Allow in the Menu Bar, and through Spotlight’s own menu bar setting. It needs Accessibility and Full Disk Access to do this, and you decide whether to grant them.

Quitting Chest puts every item back in the menu bar. You are responsible for the settings on your Mac and for keeping backups of anything important.

5. Updates

Chest checks for and installs updates with Sparkle. Updates may fix problems, add features or change how Chest works. Each update is signed, and Chest checks the signature before installing it.

6. Names and Icons

The MIT License covers the code, not the Chest or boringBar names, the Chest icon or the BORINGBAR LLC name. You may say that your project is based on Chest, but do not distribute a modified build under the Chest name or icon, or in a way that suggests it comes from or is endorsed by BORINGBAR LLC.

7. Third-Party Platforms and Services

Chest runs on macOS and works with Apple-provided frameworks and System Settings. It may be installed through Homebrew, and its source is hosted on GitHub. Those platforms and services are governed by their own terms and privacy practices.

Chest is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple Inc.

8. No Warranty

Chest is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and noninfringement. macOS updates may change how the menu bar works and stop Chest from working as described.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, BORINGBAR LLC and The Chest contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, revenue, profits, goodwill or business interruption, arising out of or related to Chest or this website.

10. Changes to These Terms

BORINGBAR LLC may update these Terms from time to time. The updated version becomes effective when posted on this page, unless a later effective date is stated. Your continued use of Chest after updated Terms are posted means you accept the revised Terms.
